Question
Is my tv set worth fixing?
My tv set seems to have died... the little power light on the board wont simply go on, either manually or with the remote.
Answer
Seeing the number of people who have told you to throw it out, you can probably understand why I left the TV repair business. brbrAll you people must understand that you are killing off a profession by your actions. brbrNow, the fault could well be fairly cheap and simple. For example a power up resistor in the power supply costing only a few cents. But if you think anyone would drive to your house just for you to then tell him you dont want it repaired, then think again. brbrI am very happy with my year old Toshiba. It gives a really good picture with my digital satellite, IPTV and DTT boxes. brIt broke down last year. Went completely dead. No light at all.brMy wife really couldnt understand why I didnt throw it out. The fault was the thermistorVDR couple. Had trouble finding one Toshiba didnt want to know. In the end I tracked one down from a specialist components shop I no longer have accounts with the suppleirs for repairmen. Paid euros, plus quarter of an hour of work. brThe thing is, I dont like the widescreen pictures on the new sets. The way I see it, you are paying more so that you can have the top and bottom of the picture cut off, or else distorted. But that is anohter subject of discussion and a matter of taste. brbrThere are still a few specialised repairmen around. brYou take the set to them so they dont waste time in traffic and they can do it straight away. Trouble is, finding one. brbrThe other thing you could do, if you really want to keep your set and not spend too much on repairs. You can try to do it yourself or a friend. There are quite a few forums giving tips on repairs. But be prepared to spend many hours first to understand what to do, then to trace the fault and finally to put it right. After all, you will virtually be going through a crashcourse in TV repairs. brThat said, in my experience many people only want an excuse to change their TV. If so, admit it to yourself and go out and get a new one.brbrPS, Cary is no repair person. The CRT does not change when signals go digital.
